David Ruffin

From September 2011

I have recently discovered 'David' by ex- Temptations singer David Ruffin.

Despite paying for the recording & mastering of the album in 1971 and even giving it a catalogue number (733), it was never released by Motown. Instead the tapes lay untouched in a cupboard for over 30 years. I suggest that was one of the label's supremo Berry Gordy's few misjudgements because from the opening track Each Day Is A Lifetime this is a complete joy. And if you thought Stevie Wonder's version of Heaven Help Us All couldn't be beaten then just take a listen to Ruffin's take on it complete with gospel choir. Add to that what sounds distinctly like a sitar on Don't Stop Lovin' Me and you've got the perfect soul album.

That Ruffin died aged 50 in 1991 makes listening to this gem even more poignant. Heaven help us all indeed.
