Cul-de-Sac
From August 2011
My search for something bad on the Fringe continues for at least another day.
In fairness it was never going to be Cul-de-Sac which jumped out at me from the Pleasance programme as soon as I picked it up in June. A black comedy about living in a cul-de-sac? Listen, I lived in a cul-de-sac for 12 years and know how black it can be.
A cross between Midsomer Murders, The League of Gentlemen & any or all of the great Guy Bellamy's novels, Cul-de-Sac is not for Daily Mail readers (or gypsies) but everyone else should find it hilarious. Is it a satire on something deeper than just British domestic life? Who cares - with lines like 'I've kissed enough men in my life to know I'm not a homosexual' it's knockabout funny.
Incidentally the speaker of that line, Toby Longworth, has an intriguing website www.answerme.co about books with questions in their titles. Keep up the good work, sir!
Cul-de-Sac, Pleasance Courtyard, until 28th August
