The Lighthouse

From October 2012

This book is dreadful. It's incredible that it found a publisher let alone get nominated for this year's Man Booker Prize shortlist.

For what it's worth, the plot concerns a middle aged man called Futh (yes, Futh) who goes on a walking holiday to Germany whereupon he muses on his life to date. Highlights include the time he changed a tyre on his car, accidentally broke a bottle of his mother's perfume and got lost on the way home from school. He is strangely obsessed with a miniature glass lighthouse.

That's about it: nothing happens. How on earth did this get on the shortlist ahead of Ned Beauman's The Teleportation Accident?
