Quiz Show

From April 2013

Rob Drummond's Bullet Catch was the only show at the Traverse last August that I didn't see. I won't be making that mistake again. His latest offering, Quiz Show, is a contender for the best play I have ever seen staged at the Trav, and by now I must have attended well over a hundred.

I don't want to give too much away but starting off as a pitch perfect parody of a late '70s / early '80s TV quiz show (complete with audience participation) Quiz Show rapidly descends into a very unsettling examination of the cult of celebrity. In a rare stage appearance, Jonathan Watson (Only An Excuse?, Bob Servant Independent) excels as quiz master Daniel Caplin and Eileen Walsh (Magdelene Sisters) gives a truly heartbreaking performance as new contestant Sandra. Everyone involved thoroughly deserves the 5 star reviews dished out by the press this week.

I can't praise this show enough: I'll be going back for seconds.

Quiz Show, Traverse Theatre, until 20th April
