Found at Sea

From February 2013

Heat, I have found, is largely overrated. However, if you are feeling the chill of a Scottish winter then warm yourself from the inside-out with a trip to the Traverse Theatre to see Found At Sea.

Written by novelist & poet Andrew Greig and adapted & directed by Traverse stalwart David Grieg, it's hard to know what this is. But whatever it is, it works.

Two unnamed men set sail towards the uninhabited Orkney island of Cava. They muse on the power of the sea, discuss past lives and discover secrets. They tell the terrible story of the sinking of HMS Royal Oak in Scapa Flow during the Second World War and the ludicrous tale of the two women who made Cava their home for 30 years. All set to live music from Rachel Newton.

Billed as 'a preview of work in progress' the performance wasn't without fluffed lines and actors Tam Dean Burn & Lewis Howden coped well with collapsing stage props. But 75 minutes well spent and a lovely example of the Scottish storytelling tradition.

Found At Sea, Traverse Theatre, until 23rd February
