Dexys II

From September 2012

I know, I know, but I'll keep it short ...

Most bands just turn up to gigs and play some songs: Dexys put on a performance. Last night at the Queens Hall was exactly the same show as they did in Glasgow in May i.e. a run through the new album, One Day I'm Going To Soar, 'followed by a few old Dexys' favourites'. No complaints from me.

I still can't get over the fact that after 27 years Kevin Rowland has come up with a collection of songs that trump almost everything that he has done before - surely the most spectacular comeback of all time and, for him, it must seem like a vindication of all the doubters. But then Rowland doesn't really do spectacular or vindictive, he just throws everything into his music and speaks from the heart. Over the years his songs have been the background to much happiness in my life and his lyrics have got me through some of the bad times.

I want to be everything, I want to be the man of my dreams
And I can't be a fucking stereotype
But it's lonely being here and living this fight
But I won't give in
I will not cave in
Until I become free

Once again, thank you Kevin - please don't leave so long next time.
